In 1888, a young client, Mary Morstan, arrives at Holmes's and asks him for help. Watson falls under the spell of the young woman who explains her problem: her father, a navigator in the Indies, died about ten years earlier. However, she has been receiving, for six years, and on a regular basis, pearls of great value. And that same day she receives a letter. An anonymous person asks her to come to an appointment. Holmes agrees to help her and, supported by Watson, accompanies Mary to the said appointment. They discover on the spot that the anonymous person is the son of a former friend and colleague of Captain Morstan. The latter reveals that their fathers had discovered a treasure of five hundred thousand pounds, but that neither the treasure nor the jewels were shared with Morstan's daughter. The man finally explains that his brother discovered the chest yesterday, hidden in their house. But when they arrive at the scene, they find the brother dead and the chest missing. Holmes and Watson then begin a dangerous journey that will lead them to a crazy chase on the Thames...
