Gruff city cop Matt Michaelson felt as thorny as the rosebush of Stony Mountain's ghostly, lovelorn legend. His kid brother had messed up bad, leaving a widow and son and leaving Matt responsible for the whole damn caboodle! Worse, the widow Liz drove Matt to sweet, forbidden distraction. With her haunting scent of roses, her timeless smile, she felt like a promise.

Whoa! Was little Lizzie big-time trouble, conjuring soul deep cravings from the far side of forever? "You'll create quite a stir here in town," Liz told Matt breathlessly, hurrying a few steps ahead of him. Her son, Jeremy, for one, would be thrilled to meet his uncle Matt. "Jeremy," Liz called to her son. "Look who's..." But Liz never got a chance to finish her announcement. Her son turned around, and his eyes grew as wide as saucers. To her amazement, Liz could see his hands begin to shake. A look of hunger filled his face, a look so intense that Liz almost cried out. There was a definite quiver in Jeremy's boyish voice when he spoke, and his eyes were shining. "Dad?" he whispered. Liz's heart stopped. "Oh, Lord," she murmured. "Damn," Matt muttered under his breath. And from the look on Matt's face, his trip back to Stony Mountain wasn't going as planned.
