To become a citizen, it is necessary to earn this right in battles.
I watched Paul Verhoeven's film "Starship Troopers" as a child, when it was just released on videotapes and reached the small screens of Russian viewers. A great Hollywood blockbuster, which is still remembered with warmth today. This is a high-quality action movie with a good picture and an interesting plot. However, I got to appreciate this story when I was an adult and it was after reading the original by Robert Heinlein. I think many people will agree with me that at a conscious age you notice completely different aspects of the work and, in general, the whole described world appears completely differently than in childhood.
It is clear that the film and the book are different works. But in both interpretations of this story, we can probably see the ancestor of such a genre as combat fiction. Heinlein took a new path in his "Starship Troopers", creating a real action novel without any embellishments and trying to squeeze into the seemingly familiar and more positive genre of space opera. This book is tough. It immerses you in the vast militaristic world of the future, where the whole Earth has already become a single federation, and in order to become a true citizen with all rights, you must complete military service.
Reading the book, you can't help but draw your own analogies with real-life civilizations where there were similar requirements for citizens. This is not surprising. Every writer is free to be inspired by various real-life examples. Heinlein does this, I think, in his work and shows the society of the future from all sides.
The main character Juan "Johnny" Rico is from a poor family, many doors are open to him, but the young man, along with his friends, enlists in the army and begins his thorny path there, gradually turning from a snotty kid into a true fighter of humanity. Thanks to a competent and interesting narrative, the reader learns how the society of the world represented in the novel is organized, who lives in it and how. Heinlein is often criticized for imagining our future, where militarism bordering on fascism and Nazism flourishes, but in my opinion, such a representation of reality is quite acceptable. Our world is quite diverse and unpredictable. Various scenarios of development are possible for him. And such a picture is quite acceptable with a certain development of the plot.
The book, despite fierce criticism, was met with unprecedented interest. It is still popular today. This is a tough fantasy action movie, where the usual dramatic lines are not traced. The war here is in the first place for true patriots of the Motherland. They are so educated and ready to defend their Land from alien enemies, beat the bastard on their territory and grandly present all this to the masses in the style of "we are right, we will win, and the enemy will be defeated."
"Starship Troopers" is an important work and already a classic of combat fiction. This is a notable work in Robert Heinlein's bibliography and a true legacy for all fans of his work and interesting fiction. The ideas offered are strong, interesting, and not without meaning. They give us a reason to reflect on what possible future awaits our civilization, and how we can cope with hypothetical enemies, being in conditions similar to the novel.
