His career as an animator began in 1963 at Mushi Production, where he was involved in [Kimba the White Lion](https://anilist.co/anime/1572/). After a few more works, he left the studio in 1968 and dedicated himself to his work as a mangaka. In 1979, he made his return to the anime industry. Masaki directed and screenwrote a handful of works for Madhouse during the '80s, out of which [Barefoot Gen](https://anilist.co/anime/1824/) being perhaps the most notable. In 1986, Masaki retired from animation and continued his manga career into the '90s.
