Logan, who continues to look for a place for himself
After the excellent film about X-Men "First Class", it was difficult to roll into this work. It still seemed good to me only after the third viewing. The film clearly lacks the scale that the previous mutant film was endowed with, but over time I decided for myself that films about Wolverine and about X-Men should be divided. That's when the story feels much better.
"Wolverine" decides to explore Logan's life after the events of The Last Battle, which ended on a seemingly positive note, but still left an indelible wound in the heart of the adamantium hero. The 2009 film told about the formation of Wolverine as we met him back in the first film. "Wolverine" goes further, telling about the aimless wanderings of a man who suffers from the fact that he basically exists in this world. In fact, this is a rather sad and even dangerous condition for a human or a mutant, which is Logan. It doesn't matter. For anyone. You can't live without a goal. It's poisonous. And the picture perfectly demonstrates this line, where Wolverine constantly meets with his visions. Beloved Jean Grey continues to appear, comforting the man, but at the same time poisoning his mind more and more when he returns to the real world. This part of the film perfectly conveys the oppressive atmosphere.
However, there are new adventures ahead, without which the film would not be the film that the audience is waiting for. The project opens up Japan to us, where the main events await Wolverine. Logan has to rethink his existence and his goals right here, when the hero suddenly realizes that his life is not over yet, there are those whom he can and should help.
The screenwriters introduce the audience to several new characters from the mutant universe, among which I personally remember the Viper performed by Svetlana Khodchenkova. She turned out to be a worthy villain: dangerous, unattractive. And indeed, the girl seemed to exude poison, the character was very unpleasant to me. And this is an absolute merit of the actress. Other actors are also good: Rila Fukushima, Hiroyuki Sanada, Tao Okamoto, Hal Yamanouchi and others. They are all in their places, organically fit into the narrative.
The visual component is at its height. The film has a lot of combat scenes, stunts, chases, as befits such a project. However, from the point of view of drama, I would not say that the project creates a powerful effect. We could have finished this aspect in the final, but in the end we have what we have.
I would like to note that for all the pros and cons of the project, its main decoration is undoubtedly Wolverine himself. Hugh Jackman is good in his role again. He gives his best 200 percent, fused with the hero, feels him, perfectly conveys the soul of the character. Hugh has already been in office for the second decade. You need to understand that he has studied this complex character perfectly, which is why he is so good.
The picture is sure to please the fans. As a result, this is still an entertaining movie, where some drama awaits in the first half due to Logan's inner demons. However, all of them will fade into the background when the narrative vector turns to events here and now. Then Wolverine will show himself to be a real beast, once again delighting fans of the franchise.
