Classic as it is
"Broadway Melody of 1929" is a film that was released almost a hundred years ago. One of the first paintings to offer plots that would seem trivial to today's audience. I advise you to make sure to make allowances for the age of the film and the peculiar novelty of the approach to both the narrative and the plot itself.
The classic situation is a love triangle that arises between the main characters: sisters Hank and Queenie and a guy named Eddie. Eddie, by the way, intends to marry Hank. However, getting to know her sister completely changes his plans when the guy falls in love with Queenie. And here lies the first blunder of the project. Well, I can't believe in such a sudden change in the guy. If only he was truly in love with his fiancee at all. Such an unexpected decision by Eddie is even discouraging. However, I make a significant allowance for the need for such a scenario situation to make the story more interesting.
Despite the fact that another participant in this "love triangle" appears in the film named Jock Warriner, played by Kenneth Thomson, the story is still remembered by the three main characters. The acting of Bessie Love, Anita Page and Charles King is impressive. The trio keeps perfectly in the frame, creating the very atmosphere of the 1920s. Each of the characters lives with a new hope that life will turn out well.
The film will clearly show how sometimes expectations can be deceptive. Broadway, high hopes, bright colors — will all this be possible in real life? After all, only a few achieve success and fame. And the picture is designed to remind this story that great fame is not available to everyone, but only to those who managed to break through and who are probably at least a little lucky.
The film can hardly be compared to a musical in its modern sense. There is not much music here, and choreography, which is familiar to musicals of our time, is essentially absent here. However, the picture is good because the creators presented it to us to immerse ourselves in this interesting story. And here it should be noted that the film still takes exactly the elements of melodrama, but not the musical numbers.
The project turned out to be important for its time. You can't take that away. The film is still being watched with interest today. Successful implementation: emotional dialogues, musical numbers, a variety of bright colors — all this made it possible to create a memorable project that won the Oscar as the best film.
"Broadway Melody of 1929" rightfully occupies its prominent place among Oscar winners. An interesting story and memorable acting make the picture lively, a little funny, often contradictory due to some scenario decisions, but without a doubt important for the whole cinema.
