One Against Raging Nature I still remember rooting for Leonardo DiCaprio at the 2016 Oscars. Another outstanding performance from a truly great actor—and this time, the statuette finally ended up in Leo’s hands. He earned it. But a great film is never just the achievement of its lead actor. Alejandro González Iñárritu’s movie is a monumental result of the collective effort of the entire crew. In our era, it’s hard to surprise anyone with high production values, stunning visuals, or impressive special effects. Yet Iñárritu chose to take a risk, investing enormous time and energy into preparing this project—and the result is absolutely worth it. The distinctive presentation and unconventional approach give us a film with a memorable story and an unusual perspective on its protagonist. This is a movie that should unquestionably be seen on the big screen. And it’s not only about enjoying the large-scale scenes. In this format, in my opinion, you can truly feel how difficult the shoot was for the entire crew. The cold landscapes, the endless forests, the suffocating frost, the oppressive silence of the trees—all of it pulls you deeper and deeper down to a place where the hopelessness of solitude awaits. Survival as a theme isn’t new, but Iñárritu’s approach makes the experience especially compelling. The viewer is presented with the tragic story of the hunter Hugh Glass, who, after helping others escape from Native American attacks and rejoin their group, finds himself in mortal danger following a bear attack. DiCaprio’s performance in the intense confrontation with the enraged wild beast inspires a kind of primal terror—he plays it that convincingly. I still remember how, even knowing the scene was coming, I gripped the armrests of my seat and was literally paralyzed for a minute while watching the struggle. It felt so real, thanks to Leo’s acting, that it took me a long time to recover afterward. Nevertheless, Glass decides to fight for his life to the very end—to survive and to take revenge on the man who left him to die alone. Every subsequent step the protagonist takes, achieved with unimaginable effort, seems to strip away his humanity. Glass undergoes a rebirth, becoming a new creature—one that will survive no matter what and make itself known to the world again. The story vividly shows that sometimes you have to become a beast, suppressing your humanity, in order to survive. Tom Hardy also delivers a strong performance. Already an established and highly skilled actor, whose work has long been appreciated, he reaches a new peak here. He is an antihero—neither good nor bad, just a man who acted the way he did because he believed it was right. His character’s motivation is clear, and the viewer’s attitude toward him is inevitably mixed. Hardy’s performance is excellent; he’s memorable precisely because he dissolves completely into his role. The film is about unbreakable willpower, courage, and faith, as well as how easily one can lose their humanity. It shows the necessity of going all the way, never giving up, in order to reach a goal. In every breath of life, you must fight—otherwise, death awaits. The movie also demonstrates that it’s in moments like these that we begin to believe and hope. When you stand on the edge between life and death, you need something to hold on to. For each person, that support is different—be it faith in God or the support of loved ones. The film is truly powerful. Heavy and vivid, unusual yet grounded, slow-burning and brutal. You could find dozens more epithets to describe it. What matters is that such a work exists. The movie teaches a lot, but above all, it teaches one thing: fight for life until the very end. Sometimes we think we are far weaker than we actually are. And Glass’s example is a perfect reminder that within each of us lives a beast—one that may one day break free to save the human within. 8 out of 10
