Everything in the world is also unchanged
The 1930 American painting "All Quiet on the Western Front" is one of the most iconic works of its time, which still remains relevant today. The topic of war has always been quite interesting and at the same time very difficult, because it is very difficult to tell about it so that people understand how scary it is.
The film tells in simple language about the everyday life of yesterday's schoolchildren, who, under the convincing monologues of their mentors, go to war, expecting what an interesting and memorable lesson it will be. However, war is not entertainment at all. This is the grief, pain, death and oblivion of thousands and thousands of those who killed their own kind and eventually fell themselves.
The picture is well staged, the film perfectly conveys the spirit of wartime, acting as one of the most memorable works of those distant years now. The film is not based on any particular plot, which is accepted, say, in modern cinema. This is partly what is remembered. Yes, and this is closer to reality. What kind of plot can there be if there is a war all around? Solid, ugly, inexhaustible and scary. Bullets are flying, shells are exploding, people are dying. In fact, there can be nothing plot-based here. At least for the characters in the film. It's just their everyday combat, some kind of dialogues, just existence.
The film directed by Lewis Milestone manages to show a dozen of the most interesting plots within the framework of one narrative, where the audience is shown completely different scenes. The whole range of emotions is present here, ranging from scenes of joy of the upcoming glorious battle, to depressing explosions that are designed to end many lives at once.
Everyone looks decent in the picture. The actors are completely immersed in the atmosphere of horror of those years and events, they perfectly convey the nerve of what is happening. I would especially like to highlight the game of Lew Ayres, who showed Paul on the screen, one of the most memorable characters in the picture. In my opinion, this hero turned out to be the brightest, his face and facial expressions are especially memorable. Through them, you can trace the life of an entire generation that were schoolchildren only yesterday, and after a while they lived a whole life.
"All Quiet on the Western Front" is a film that won the Oscar twice, becoming the best picture and receiving the award for best director. It's a pity that Ayres didn't even get a nomination for best actor. The film still looks good today. Dark and gray, old as the war itself, but still relevant even after almost a century of its existence. Cinema is designed to refresh people's minds about the horror of war, how terrible it is, and how mercilessly, at the same time impartially and even casually destroys the fate of an entire generation.
