A Father Will Always Protect His Daughter "Commando" is a quintessential VHS-era action classic — the kind of movie that probably won’t catch the interest of today’s audiences, yet is remembered with special warmth by the older generation, who once watched with wild excitement as old Arnie tore through bad guys left and right. Schwarzenegger plays a former commando with the unforgettable name John Matrix, who is forced to protect his daughter after she’s kidnapped by his former colleagues. The film’s atmosphere is genuinely cool and wonderfully “analog.” You get a ton of over-the-top shootouts, brutal fights, and epic battles. Every scene is packed with energy and tension, and Schwarzenegger, as always, looks unbeatable and effortlessly cool. But the main antagonist deserves just as much attention — convincingly played by Vernon Wells. He portrays Matrix’s former teammate who has gone down a dark path and now stands against Arnie. Wells nails the role, creating a portrait of a ruthless, merciless villain. It’s a classic type — the kind of bad guy who’s almost equal to the hero in strength and charisma. Almost. Schwarzenegger perfectly embodies the image of an indestructible force that the villains should fear — a guy you never really worry about. That’s simply the nature of the genre: a straightforward action movie of its era, where the hero can wipe out an entire army on his own. Not very realistic, but undeniably entertaining. The protagonist is, of course, tough, fearless, and unstoppable. Schwarzenegger showcases his talent here — because playing a skilled warrior and a caring father requires more nuance than it seems. Arnold pulls it off effortlessly. You root for him, you care about him. And he’s not just a walking pile of muscles — he thinks, evaluates, plans. I’d also highlight the early film career of Alyssa Milano, who plays Matrix’s daughter. Her role is small, but she does an excellent job. Overall, "Commando" is a solid action film of its time — one that still brings warmth and a smile when remembered today. Yes, it’s a product of its era, but what a product. Its gritty atmosphere, strong performances, tense storyline, and memorable action scenes make it unforgettable for viewers. This film lets you dive into a world of pure action and adventure — and reminds you just how important family is. 8 out of 10
