Welcome to Hope County, Montana, land of the free and the brave, but also home to a fanatical doomsday cult known as The Project at Eden’s Gate that is threatening the community's freedom. Stand up to the cult’s leader, Joseph Seed and the Heralds, and spark the fires of resistance that will liberate the besieged community. In this expansive world, your limits and creativity will be tested against the biggest and most ruthless baddest enemy Far Cry has ever seen. It’ll be wild and it’ll get weird, but as long as you keep your wits about you, the residents of Hope County can rest assured knowing you’re their beacon of hope.

The game is set in the fictional Hope County, Montana, where a preacher named Joseph Seed has risen to prominence in the region. Seed believes that he has been chosen to protect the people of Hope County from an "inevitable collapse" and has established a congregation called Eden's Gate. Ostensibly, this is to fulfill his mission of leading the people to salvation; in reality, Seed is a radical preacher and Eden's Gate is a militaristic doomsday cult. Under his rule, Eden's Gate has used both coercion and violence to forcibly convert the residents of Hope County, and intimidation to keep them from contacting the federal government for help. When an attempt to arrest Seed ends with the deaths of several lawmen, the player is swept into the armed conflict between Eden's Gate and the remaining Hope County residents who are organizing themselves into a resistance movement. The player takes on the role of a sheriff's deputy who is sent to Hope County to arrest Seed. Seed has assumed the title of "the Father" and maintains control over Hope County with the aid of his siblings, known as "the Heralds": Jacob, a former military officer that oversees their armed soldiers; John, a lawyer that has been able to acquire much of the land in Hope County for Eden's Gate; and Faith, who acts as a pacifist to bring the people to believe and trust in her older brother. The residents of Hope County opposed to Seed include Pastor Jerome, a local church leader that has seen his congregation taken by Eden's Gate; Mary May, a bartender whose father was murdered by the cult; and Nick Rye, a cropduster pilot who wants to eliminate the influence of the cult in order to build a better future for his children.

Cultists and a Hail of Bullets: How I Spent My Summer in Montana "Far Cry 5" is one of those games that greets you right at the start with: “We’ve found God, and now we’re enlightening everyone… with assault rifles in hand.” From the very first minutes, it nails the atmosphere: dark, tense, but not overbearing. The main villain is Joseph Seed, a charismatic bearded preacher who spouts spiritual nonsense with such conviction that you can’t help but listen. He has three “horsemen of the apocalypse” — Jacob, John, and Faith. All Seeds. Each has their own style and method of brainwashing. One tortures and “redeems,” another hardens people through combat, and the third keeps everyone high and promises a bright future in a cloud of pink smoke. Quite the cheerful little family. The story doesn’t exactly reinvent the wheel (literally, since we’re already in Montana), but it’s told with energy. There’s tension, drama, and plenty of moments that push the plot forward. Each region is controlled by one of Joseph’s lieutenants, and you’ll have to deal with them one by one, freeing territory as you go. Beat one of these lunatics, watch a cutscene, and you’re free to move on. I wish the narrative went a bit deeper, but it is what it is. Once you’ve taken care of the boss’s inner circle, Joseph himself “takes the stage,” and it’s time for the final showdown. Gameplay is pure "Far Cry": rescue hostages, gather supplies, liberate farms, and so on. The map is full of activity points of all kinds. There are companions — both human and animal. Yes, you can bring a dog along. Or an aunt with an assault rifle. Or a guy flying high above in a plane. You can have two buddies with you at a time, each with their own personality, combat style, and catchphrases, making the journey through Eden’s Gate territory feel lively and varied. They don’t just silently tag along; they comment on events, share their thoughts, sometimes even open up emotionally. Feels almost like traveling with real friends. The missions are pleasantly diverse. It’s not all “go there, kill that, come back.” Sometimes you’ll be chasing someone down, sneaking into a location, or hunting for a secret cave. Or you can just wander off and explore — the game’s world is worth seeing. The graphics are excellent, with plenty of detail: from the leaves on the trees to the wide variety of animals, peaceful and otherwise. Rivers, fields, farms, mountains, even the day-night cycle — it all looks great. The mission with Joseph’s giant statue stands out, as do a couple of other memorable ones. At some point, it might feel like you’re doing the same things over and over, but that’s the nature of the game’s mechanics. The soundtrack is a bonus in itself. Pleasant, slightly melancholic melodies contrast wonderfully with the fact that you just blew up another barn or torched a field of “beautiful plants.” It adds to the atmosphere, making you feel less like a soldier and more like the protagonist of a moody indie film about the fall of a small American town. "Far Cry 5" is a solid continuation of the series. The mechanics are familiar, but the packaging is fresh. There’s plenty to shoot, lots to see, and more than a few companions to talk to (even if one of them is a dog). That’s at least a couple dozen hours of gameplay — especially if you take your time and get lost in the local scenery. 8 out of 10
