Another grandiose world of Nolan
The name "The Beginning" in the Russian translation of Christopher Nolan's film has already become recognizable and accepted, thanks to the master's masterpiece work. However, it would be more correct to translate the film as "The Origin", the origin of a thought in the mind of a person who is being introduced there. But let the difficulties of translation remain them. In fact, the audience saw the excellent work of the director, where he opened new worlds for our imagination.
The film offers a fairly fresh idea of introducing thought into a person's brain by immersing him in a controlled sleep. This fantastic idea, however, is presented as something impossible, but quite a great opportunity that can be used in industrial espionage. The plot develops in such a way that through the action the viewer learns about this technology, methods of implementation, difficulties and the like. But this is done very competently and in portions, which does not cause the viewer difficulties in understanding. I think this is a very strong side of the script and the author's vision.
In addition to the main storyline, there is another one — the love line of Cobb and his wife, which constantly comes to him in dreams, and this is a danger to fulfill the assigned mission. Such a turn makes you follow what is happening on the screen, gradually understanding what happened in the past. And the further events lead us, the better we understand the essence of what happened between the spouses. They also reveal to us how this is connected with each next level of sleep, where the heroes will go.
It makes no sense to talk about the plot, because such a story should definitely be seen for yourself. After all, the narrative is replete with the brightest pictures, different shades, which perfectly demonstrate immersion in one level or another, and the gorgeous music from Hans Zimmer leaves almost no one indifferent, very organically fitting into what is happening on the screen, literally creating a holistic image of everything in the frame.
Acting, as always, is on top. Each of the characters comes to life on the screen thanks to the masters of their craft that meet in the frame. I would especially like to highlight the work of Leonardo DiCaprio, who, as always, is spectacular, convincing and charismatic. No less important is the work of Sergei Burunov, which duplicates the hero. The actor gave everything 100 percent to make the image of Cobb convincing and memorable for the Russian audience. Thank you.
Nolan's work allows us to see ourselves from the outside, to feel how our fears can play with us, coming in dreams. After all, dreams are a bridge between us and our subconscious. All the hidden problems are hiding somewhere out there, and we, like the main character, often hammer fears and pains into the darkest corners of the subconscious, unwittingly. And one day it may be very dangerous for us. It seems to me that Nolan wanted to show this idea, or maybe I brought it out for myself, realizing that we, people, cannot keep everything to ourselves, convince ourselves that everything is fine in this or that situation. Often this is not the case, and such a solution to negate internal problems is not true.
Returning to the main character and his situation, I would like to note two important points that he is going through. This is the fault of the spouse, who could not in the end correctly assess the situation that was created by both: the reality and unreality of the true world. What happened after made Cobb disappear for a long time, leaving his children, whom he misses a lot. The second point is the fear of making a mistake yourself about where the true reality is and where the dream is. After all, once believing in a dream, mistaking it for reality, Cobb is afraid to stay in it forever, and this is practically death.
The finale of the picture has been discussed by the audience for more than ten years. It's open. And I think that's fine. After the picture, everyone will decide for himself how the story of the main character ends.
The Beginning is a great movie. This is a spectacular and emotional blockbuster, a dramatic and hopeful story. Nolan has always been good at exploring the facets of sleep and reality. The film will not let you get bored, constantly sending us to one level of sleep, then to another, then to the third. All this is accompanied by a high-quality picture, an excellent soundtrack and a great acting.
In the final, I would like to share an observation. The idea of a film about the reality and unreality of what is happening is very relevant in recent years, when our world has become so dependent on digital technologies that sometimes you yourself can not determine where you are told the real facts, and where — outright lies. And in this terribly large flow of information, each person decides for himself what to believe and what not, what can really be real, and what is an outright stuffing. Sometimes you wonder if this is really happening in Java? Everyone will have their own answer.
